Garrett Reisman, Ph.D. - United States Astronaut, NASA

Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Reisman is a NASA Astronaut and Mission Specialist Candidate.

He received his B.S. in Economics and a B.S. In Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania. He continued his work in Mechanical Engineering, receiving an M.S. from the California Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. in 1997. His multiphase fluid mechanics research provided the first experimental evidence of the presence of shock waves in unsteady cloud cavitation. For this discovery he was presented with the Bruce Chapman Award for excellence in hydrodynamics research at Caltech.

From 1996 to 1998 Dr. Reisman was employed by TRW as a Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation and Control Engineer in the Space and Technology Division, Redondo Beach, California. While at TRW, he designed the thruster-based attitude control system for the NASA EOS PM-1 Spacecraft.

Selected by NASA in June 1998, Dr. Reisman reported for training in August 1998. He is currently assigned to the Astronaut Office: Robotics Branch at the Johnson Space Center. He will serve in technical assignments until assigned to a space flight.

His recreational interests include flying, skiing & snowboarding, rock climbing, mountaineering, canyoneering, and SCUBA diving. Dr. Reisman is an FAA Certified Flight Instructor.
